Valentine’s Day: Here’s What Our Members Think

Cashrewards recently released a survey asking about your Valentine’s Day intentions and the results are in, offering some intriguing insights into our romantic habits!

When asked “What would you like to receive from your partner”, spending “special, quality time” is the clear winner (44% of respondents), way ahead of traditional favourites such as flowers (9%) or lingerie (4%).

The next clear favourite is not jewellery or a watch (11%), clothing (3%) or even “a raunchy night with your partner” (13%). Instead, coming in as Australians’ second favourite Valentine’s gift (16%) is that good, old-fashioned aphrodisiac: “Someone to clean the house, do the washing and cook for you for a week”.

When it comes to the question of “What are your Valentine’s Day plans?”, it seems we’re a little bit divided. While nearly half of respondents (47%) are planning to spend a “date night with my partner”, others have different ideas. Nearly a third (33%) say “my partner and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day”, while singles declare they “hate Valentine’s Day” (15%), with only 5% of singles intending to spend the night with their “girls/guys” in order to “meet new people”.

There are also some clear views on “the worst way to be proposed to”, with results showing we have a greater aversion to Donald Trump than to tiger sharks or fear of heights. While 48% of respondents say a proposal “via text message / social media” would be worst, nearly a third (28%) said being proposed to “on a reality show with The Don at Mar-a-Lago” was the worst option. This is more than twice as many as those who opted for “scuba diving with tiger sharks and no cage” (14%) or “tandem skydiving with a newbie instructor” (10%).

Thank you and happy Valentine’s Day to all our members especially those who took time to share their views. The online survey had more than 500 respondents between the 2nd and 8th of February.

“Valentine’s Day is a major online retail event, and our survey results align with many of the special deals and offers we have on site right now,” Cashrewards CEO, Andrew Clarke says. “Experience outlets such as RedBalloon, Adrenaline, and Groupon, and our travel and accommodation partners, including Virgin Australia and Emirates, and Booking.com, wotif.com, Hotels.com all do extremely well at this time, with some offering special deals and big Cashback on everything you buy.”

Mr Clarke said that a host of other Cashrewards partners also had strong deals for Valentine’s Day, estimating that this year, Australians will spend some $1.7 billion overall on Valentine’s gifts.

When asked how he intends to spend this Valentine’s Day, Mr Clarke had a cheeky word of romantic advice for Aussie men.

“Looking at what people want to receive for Valentine’s Day it looks like I might be picking up the vacuum cleaner and hitting the stove and washing machine this year,” he said. “Maybe some of the other blokes out there might think about doing the same.”
